Hey There !
Because I read this book in English instead of Turkish I am gonna make this review in English. Translation is on the way so no worries !
“We never really talked much or even looked at each other, but it didn’t matter because we were looking at the same sky together, which is maybe even more intimate than eye contact anyway. I mean, anybody can look at you. It’s quite rare to find someone who sees the same world you see.”
Do you like John Green ? He is number one young adult drama books writer for many people and he loves what he is doing. I’ve read some of his previous books like Fault in our Stars, Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns. Paper Towns is my personal favorite from his works. And I think FioS is a little bit overrated but I love it and his other works anyway. He usually writes about real life, not dream life and that what makes him great in my eyes, though sometimes he adds his iconic cliches such as confident person and his/hers incompeted lover.
Whenever I read his books, I always find a character I can relate to myself. And he didn’t suprise me again. I made my father buy this book for me. and I didn’t read it for a while. Maybe I was waiting for the right moment to read, as a part of my reading challenge, maybe. Prompt: read a book with a character who has a hobby you practice. This book has more than one characters appropriate for this category.
The character who practices the hobby I am practicing is Davis. He is interested in poetry as well as blogging just like me. Also he is interested in space and sky, but I only interested in stargazing. He isn’t the protoganist or antagonist. He is the billionare son of the recently lost man and our protoganist, Aza, is playing sherlock holmes in order to find his dad or the win the reward money or none of this above. I do not wanna give spoilers.
As I mentioned before John Green usually writes about the real life situations we liked to ignore or worse never tried to learn. This time he wrote about a character with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) which is Aza and through her we take a deep look into a daily life with OCD.
I was aware that there is disorder like this but I’ve never thought about how this disorder effects the daily life. How thinking, over thinking, thinkings turn into a nonescapable big spiral can make a life much more harder than it already is. Also our writer had a condition like this before and this book is written for the awareness. Name of the book is come from this and he compared thinking to turtles all way down.
“Turtles all the way down” is an expression of the problem of infinite regress. The saying alludes to the mythological idea of a World Turtle that supports the earth on its back. It suggests that this turtle rests on the back of an even larger turtle, which itself is part of a column of increasingly large turtles that continues indefinitely (i.e., “turtles all the way down”).
I want to mention some other characters which I related with myself. Daisy is first. I can proudly say that I am a professional fan girl even I published one fan fic in my tumblr account. Also I am interested in art like Michael, I paint watercolour fanarts. But mostly I relate with myself with Aza. I am an over thinker too, even sometimes my own thoughts make me uncomfortable, and sometimes I am afraid of them. I don’t have OCD (maybe not yet) and I didn’t write all of this paragraph to show sympathy. I am just telling how I feel. Also I related Aza that I pushed myself to be a good person, friend, daughter and a student just like her. And I am fully aware that how this pushes make me feel that am I really this person I push myself to be or someone else.
This book take place in America İndianapolis where our writer raised. This book is kinda his slice of life. Such as the relation between David Copperfield and Charles Dickens. If you gonna read, please remind this while reading.
There was more I wanted to add this post but I believe I did the most important part. I shared my feelings the best way I could. Go ahead and read. I hope this post will reach him.
